A Manhattan federal court is set to hear arguments in a lawsuit challenging the detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student that the Trump Administration is trying to deport over his role in pro-Palestinian protests at the New York City school last year.

Khalil’s arrest casts Columbia University into the spotlight almost a year after protesters set up an encampment on the Ivy League school’s lawn to protest the war — part of a nationwide movement on campuses across the country. It also signals the Trump administration’s escalating approach to pro-Palestinian activism on college campuses.

Agents told Mahmoud Khalil’s attorney that they were revoking Khalil’s green card. He is legally considered a permanent resident.
