Interstate 80 reopened Monday in Wharton, New Jersey after emergency repairs to a massive sinkhole. Crews have been working around the clock to repair the busy roadway in Morris County after the 40-foot sinkhole opened up Thursday morning on the eastbound side.

Interstate 80 reopened through North Jersey on Monday morning, four days after a sinkhole swallowed the road and snarled traffic during the busy holiday weekend. Repair crews worked around the clock to fix the damage in Wharton, where a giant chunk of the right shoulder in the eastbound lanes collapsed on Thursday morning.

A sinkhole on I-80 in New Jersey is causing delays and detours Thursday as crews work to plan repairs. The sinkhole opened on Interstate 80 eastbound in Wharton in Morris County. The state Department of Transportation is warning motorists to expect delays through the area and to consider alternate routes.

The NJ Department of Transportation said they are making progress on repairing the sinkhole on I-80 east in Wharton.

I-80 eastbound is scheduled to reopen at 9 a.m. Monday in Wharton, NJ, if the weather cooperates. The sinkhole opened up around 7:45 a.m. Thursday just past Exit 34 in Wharton, swallowing a portion of the shoulder and encroaching on the right lane going eastbound.
