The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Tuesday said it would extend “all possible help” to secure the release of Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala who has been awarded the death sentence in Yemen.

Priya has been imprisoned in Yemen for the alleged murder of a Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi after she injected him with sedatives in an attempt to retrieve her passport from his possession.

Nimisha Priya, a native of Palakkad in Kerala, had been working as a nurse in Yemen since 2008. She landed in trouble while attempting to start her own nursing clinic in Sana'a, using forged documents to show that she was married to a Yemeni man.

Nimisha Priya's case is back in the spotlight following comments from MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswa. Yemen media reports indicate her execution may take place within a month, prompting inquiries into the details of her case.
