Sudan has filed a case against the United Arab Emirates at the World Court for allegedly violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention by arming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, the International Court of Justice said on Thursday.

In an International Court of Justice complaint, the Sudanese government says the United Arab Emirates is fueling genocidal actions by funding rebels in the country’s civil war.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sudan formally reported the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Wednesday, accusing them of supporting genocide against the Masalit tribe in Western Darfur.

The United Arab Emirates, according Khartoum, is “complicit in the genocide” of West Darfur’s Masalit community, through its military, economic, and political support of the Rapid Support Forces, an allegation UAE dismissed as a “cynical publicity stunt”.

A war between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has resulted in some 150,000 deaths, according to a former US envoy.

The United Arab Emirates has long been accused by Sudan and others of supporting the rebel paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
