Boston's AL East rival gives Jamie Westbrook an invitation to spring training and a chance to impress the Rays.
Westbrook slashed .267/.364/.436 in 49 games for the Worcester Red Sox with five home runs and 25 RBI before he was called up to the majors for the first time. The Massachusetts native made his MLB debut with the Red Sox after 11 minor league seasons with five different organizations.
Saturday’s 6-4 loss to the Red Sox seemed to fall on them, much like Friday’s 4-0 blanking against the Yankees in the opener. “Some early inconsistency that you come to expect a little bit,” manager Kevin Cash said. “But I’m confident we’ve got a group here that will work the kinks out and get in count control and be a little bit more efficient.”
The Rays signed veteran minor league second baseman Jamie Westbrook to a minor league deal with a spring invite. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.
Yu Chang, a few years removed from his time with the Guardians, Rays and Red Sox, hit a home run in Chinese Taipei's loss to Spain on Friday.
