The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sued Walmart and payment app Branch Messenger, accusing them of illegally opening 1 million deposit accounts and charging $10 million in fees.
Walmart and a financial tech company are being sued over allegations the retail giant forced drivers to use costly, complicated deposit accounts in order to get paid and raked-in millions in the process.
The lawsuit alleges that Walmart deposited drivers’ pay into accounts with payment platform Branch Messenger without the drivers’ consent.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sued Walmart and the payments platform Branch Messenger in federal court in Minnesota.
“Walmart made false promises, illegally opened accounts, and took advantage of more than a million delivery drivers,” CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said. Neither Walmart nor Branch Messenger immediately responded to a request for comment.
Walmart Inc. (NYSE:WMT) shares are trading lower on Monday. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) filed a lawsuit against the company and Branch Messenger over concerns regarding junk fees.
