The final king tide of the season is expected this week from Saturday to Monday on the Oregon coast. King tides are very high tides that generally happen during new and full moons. They can cause big waves and flooding.

King tides occur when the alignment of the sun and moon combine to add extra gravitational pull on the Earth, causing its oceans to swell. The third and final round of the unseasonably high tides will bring more coastal flooding and hazardous beach conditions to Oregon and Washington.

The high tides can move rapidly up the beach and over structures. Another serious of King Tides is expected along the Oregon Coast this weekend. Every winter, tides on the Oregon Coast get higher than other times of the year.

Joseph Neill vanished after going to take pictures of the king tides, which surged that weekend along the Oregon coast. North Bend police, the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Coast Guard and a host of volunteers searched for him in the days and weeks afterward. His car was found near Jordan Point, across the bay from North Bend.
